Romans 1. 19-20

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Paul explains that people are able to know certain things about God because God Himself has already revealed them within the human heart. Although people cannot fully understand all of God’s mysteries, they can still recognize His eternal power and divine nature. These are not things that can be directly seen with human eyes. Rather, when people observe the created world—the universe, the sky, mountains, oceans, and the wonders of nature—they naturally sense a transcendent power and divine presence behind it all. This sense of awe does not come merely from human intelligence, philosophy, or scientific knowledge; it comes from God’s revelation already placed within humanity.

Therefore, when people honestly confront the natural world, their hearts recognize that behind creation there must be a Creator with eternal power and divine nature. Even many great scientists have acknowledged that the universe reflects intelligence and order beyond itself. For this reason, Paul insists that God’s eternal power and divine nature are “clearly seen,” leaving humanity without excuse for completely denying God. The real problem is not that people know nothing about God, but that even when they recognize Him, they still choose to reject Him.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Paul explains that God saves people by giving them “the righteousness of God.” Human beings are sinful and unrighteous by nature, so they cannot be reconciled to God through their own efforts. Only by receiving God’s righteousness can they be restored to a right relationship with Him and receive salvation. This righteousness does not come from human works or moral behavior; it comes entirely from God. When a person believes the gospel and puts their faith in Jesus Christ, they receive this righteousness. Therefore, the gospel, Jesus Christ, salvation, and the righteousness of God are all closely connected. What Paul later calls “justification by faith” means that through faith, believers receive God’s righteousness and are declared righteous before Him.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Paul emphasizes in Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel,” because many people at that time found the gospel difficult to accept and even embarrassing. The message of the gospel is that God saves the world through His Son, Jesus Christ, and whoever believes in Him will be saved. To the Gentiles, this sounded strange and unbelievable because they did not know the God of Israel. To the Jews, it was also difficult to accept because they could not understand how the Messiah could be crucified and executed.

Because of this, people naturally tend to soften or modify the gospel to make it more acceptable. Many Christians also feel uncomfortable or ashamed when sharing the gospel because they worry that others will think it sounds foolish or unbelievable. Paul clearly understood this human tendency, yet he boldly declared that he was not ashamed of the gospel.

The reason is that the gospel is not merely “good news”; it is “the power of God.” The gospel itself carries God’s power to change hearts and save people. It does not need human embellishment, clever presentation, or adjustment. What Christians are called to do is simply and faithfully proclaim the gospel. The response of the listener ultimately belongs to God.

This gospel has the power to save everyone who believes, whether Jew or Gentile. The gospel is God’s way of saving humanity and the revelation of His divine power.

1
This is for my foodie friends. In case you thought lettuce was only for salads, here I’m cooking it in some butter with an onion. Then I add some mushrooms, chicken, fresh tomatoes, and some other things– not sure yet. Lettuce is also great in soups, or you can grill it and serve it with blue cheese.

2
We didn’t feel like cooking last night, and besides, we didn’t have any food in the house, so we decided to order some take-out salads from our wonderful local pizzeria. They were all very good, but my favorite was a chicken salad with carrots, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and some pieces of fried bread.

3
Brunch Sunday afternoon at a restaurant in the East Village, called Timna. We had lots of different sharing plates. I loved everything, especially this dish called shakshuka, which is North African, and it’s basically eggs in a tomato sauce, but the mixture of herbs and spices makes it taste great. And the bread we had to dip in the sauce was wonderful, too. Go there. Soon.

4
OK guys, this is it! Our Thanksgiving dinner – which we had at 6:30 last night. All the usual things: turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, lots of vegetables, and more…and more…
Mom said, “Why not go to a restaurant this year – maybe have seafood?”, but I said, “No, I want it homemade and traditional” – so she did it. Thanks, Mom. I now need to spend a few hours on the sofa
before I even think about going to bed. So how was yours?

9.3

(script in Student Book on p.121)
W = woman, M = man
W We need food for the weekend – can you go to the store on your
way home this evening?
M OK, I guess so. What do we need?
W Let’s see. We need some coffee, we don’t have any.
M OK…coffee…
W And some milk. And some juice.
M Orange juice?
W Yeah. And maybe apple juice, too.
M OK. What else?
W Get a pineapple if they have them.
M One pineapple…
W And some oranges – four or five oranges – and some bananas.
And I want to make a vegetable curry, so get some onions, some
potatoes, some tomatoes…
M Hold on, wait a minute…! Potatoes…
W Yes, two or three big ones. Oh, and forget the tomatoes – we’ve
got some in the refrigerator. And a bottle of soda.
M Coke? Pepsi?
W Any kind is fine. Oh, and some lettuce, I want to make a salad.
M Some lettuce…Do we need any tomatoes?
W No, I said no tomatoes!
M Sorry, yes, you did. Is that everything?
W Yes, I think so. And don’t forget anything!

A haunted castle

Hi, I’m Ned. Welcome to Portchester Castle. Portchester Castle is over one thousand seven hundred years old. It’s near Portsmouth, a city on the south coast of England. The castle is part of English Heritage. English Heritage is a charity, which manages over four hundred old buildings and monuments in England.

With so many old buildings, there are also lots of reports of ghosts. And ghosts are sometimes a problem for staff and visitors at English. Heritage. In fact, some staff members decided to leave their jobs because of the ghosts. I’ve come here to Portchester to find out more about reports of not one, but four ghosts! And many of the ghosts come from different times in Portchester’s long history. Portchester Castle dates back to Roman Britain; the Romans built the original castle here in the year two hundred and ninety. The first ghost report also comes from

Roman times. Visitors report that they see the ghost of a Roman soldier guarding the walls, but they say they don’t feel frightened. In the Middle Ages, Portchester became a favorite castle for the kings and queens of England. During this time, a small monastery was built.

There’s a church here now in place of the monastery. People say that they see a man dressed in black here and they think he is the ghost of a monk from the monastery. Surprisingly, people don’t feel frightened when they see him. They say that he disappears when they look at him.

1 We stayed at The Roosevelt Hollywood for two nights. It’s a really nice place — a very elegant, very LA hotel. The service, atmosphere, and room were excellent and we really enjoyed our stay. But we had a really strange experience. On the first night, we woke up at 3:30 in the morning. There was a strange noise outside our door, like someone softly playing a trumpet. To tell you the truth, we were a little bit frightened. Why would someone play the trumpet in the middle of the night? Then we thought that it was probably another guest in the hall, and maybe they were listening to music on their cell phone or something, and we went back to sleep. But on the second night, the same exact thing happened. So we just thought, strange, maybe it’s because it’s an old hotel and the walls are thin. But when we got home, we told the story to a friend, and he told us that The Roosevelt Hollywood is haunted. We looked on the internet, and we read that people say that room 924 has a ghost! And our room was 922, the next room! We sent an email to The Roosevelt Hollywood and told them about it and they sent us some really interesting information about the ghost stories. We’d really like to stay in this
fantastic hotel again, but maybe not in room 924!

Romans 1.3-1.4

3. 論到他兒子─我主耶穌基督。按肉體說,是從大衛後裔生的;
concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh
and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Jesus Christ, through His resurrection from the dead, was declared with power to be the Son of God. According to the flesh, He is a descendant of David, sharing in the limitations and frailties of human life. Because He is truly human, He understands us, has compassion upon us, and knows us intimately; thus, He is near to us.

Yet according to the Spirit of holiness, He is revealed through His resurrection to be the Son of God. The resurrection stands as the decisive mark of faith, demonstrating His authority over death and manifesting the divine power that raised Him.

No one can recognize the true identity of Jesus by human effort alone; it is only through the revelation of the Holy Spirit that we come to see that He is the Christ. Precisely because He possesses both full humanity and full divinity, He is able not only to sympathize with our condition but also to save us, granting us hope and life.

Romans 1.2

which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,

Romans 1.1

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,

Prisca Chiu

In February 2026, as I reflected again on the study of the Book of Romans led by Professor Immanuel Chih-Ming Ke in 2012, my heart was filled with rich insights and deep emotion. Looking back after so many years, the light of Scripture has not faded; rather, through the experiences of life, it has become even more real and profound.

From October 19, 2006—the first day I met Professor Ke—I began attending the Bible study group he led at the “Dadu Mountain Bible Study Room,” continuing faithfully until 2013.

During those seven years, Professor Ke guided us with great seriousness and dedication in understanding the truth of Scripture. Like the Apostle Paul, he did not hesitate to share with us the will of God, and through his own life, he bore witness to who our Lord is—a true and living God.

I am especially grateful to Professor Ke for his tireless commitment over the years. With patience and wisdom, he helped us grow in our understanding of the truth, leaving a lasting impact on our hearts. His spiritual teaching and faithful companionship have become a precious treasure in our lives, for which I am deeply thankful.

Here, I would like to continue sharing the Book of Romans, passing on the truths we received and learned under his guidance, expressed through my own understanding. I hope these messages will not remain merely as memories, but will become a real source of help and blessing in our lives today.

I firmly believe that the Word of God itself carries great power, as it is written—it brings salvation to all who believe. May these reflections help more people recognize the preciousness of the gospel and experience the renewal and hope that truth brings.

F What was your best ever New Year’s Eve? One you always remember?

D Oh, definitely 2014, when I was in Rio.

F Who were you with?

D I was with my boyfriend Marcelo, who’s Brazilian.

F Why was it so special?

D Well, Brazil has special traditions for New Year’s Eve, and they were all new for me. For example, it’s a Brazilian tradition to wear white clothes for New Year’s Eve because white is a symbol of peace, so I wore a beautiful white dress, which Marcelo’s mother bought me. I have a photo somewhere on my phone. Yes, here, look!

F How pretty. So what did you do?

D Uh, let me think. Well, first we had a typical New Year’s Eve dinner with Marcelo’s family. And then, I guess it was about ten, we got a bus to Copacabana.

F What was the atmosphere like there?

D Oh, it was amazing! The streets were already full of people. We went to a show at a place near the beach. It was great, and we danced samba.

F Wow. Were you there at midnight?

D No, no. When we saw it was almost midnight, we went to the beach, and the typical countdown started, you know – ten, nine, eight…Happy New Year! Everywhere we heard the sound of people celebrating, and we watched the wonderful fireworks.

F It sounds great. What did people do when the fireworks finished?

D Most people went to other parties, or they went home.

F And what about you?

D We decided to go to a different beach, a beach called Praia do Arpoador, and we took our first swim of the new year. It was magical.
