The Blue Cave, Penghu, Taiwan

"Penghu unique beauty is difficult to understate and it is tough to select from the multitude of stunning natural scenery it has to offer. The Blue Cave (藍洞) is undoubtedly a highlight though. Situated on the uninhabited Xiji Islet (西吉嶼) in the South Penghu Marine National Park, the Blue Cave features Penghu’s trademark basalt columns inside a cave which is beautifully lit up thanks to a large opening in the rocky ceiling.

The light reflecting on the clear blue sea in the cave lights the whole place up in a shimmering bright blue light which is a truly staggering spectacle. Sadly, dangerous currents and rockfalls have made the cave unsafe to visit and anyone found entering the cave can expect a heavy fine. But many boat tours still stop outside the cave to offer visitors a tantalizing glimpse of one of Taiwan’s unique natural wonders." Cited from:

Little Taiwan, Qimei, Penghu, Taiwan

"Located in the northeast of Qimei Island, Qimei Little Taiwan(小台灣) is a wave-cut platform with the shape just like Taiwan. Heading north along the Coastal Highway, visitor can get to a kiosk with the best view of the site. Qimei Little Taiwan is a must visit tourist destination of Qimei Island or even Penghu. It has the incredible resemblance of shape of Taiwan and even a rock looked just like Gueishan Island at the corresponding position. The shape is even more apparent when ebb. There is grassland nearby the shore perfect for camping, and thus also becomes a popular fishing spot." Cited from:

Twin Hearts Stone Weir, Qimei Island, Penghu, Taiwan

"Qimei’s iconic symbol is the Twin Hearts Stone Weir(七美鄉雙心石滬), made of stones laboriously stacked, which does its duty by leaving marine creatures stranded at low tide after innocently meandering in at high. The romance and scenic beauty of this place entice a steady tide of soon-to-be-newlyweds for wedding-photo shoots." Cited from:

Moses Parting Sea, Penghu, Taiwan

"'Moses Parted the Sea'(奎壁山)— a local tourist attraction that has captivated visitors for the illusion of the sea parting when a thin strip of land is laid bare when tides retreat like the biblical story of Moses parting the Red Sea." Cited from Taiwan News, 2017.

Jishanyu, Penghu, Taiwan

"The joints of the basalt columns surrounding Jishanyu (雞善嶼) are very distinctive. The different heights of these columns look like the pipes of an organ. The steep cliffs have become the favorite nesting place for seagulls. Jishanyu has been designated as a basalt conservation area. Tourists may take a boat trip around the islet, but may not make a landing." Cited from:

Daguoye Columnar Basalt, Penghu, Taiwan

"On the check-off list for geology enthusiasts are some of the main islands’ most impressive basalt-column formations – the Daguoye Columnar Basalt (池東大菓葉玄武岩), Secret Three Stone Walls, and Chixi Rock Waterfall – located close together in Xiyu’s mid-section. The first faces the inland sea, with a sweeping view toward small Magong city far across the water (the islands’ largest settlement and main port of entry)" Cited from:

Erkan Historical Village, Penghu, Taiwan

"Located in Xiyu island of Penghu, Erkan Historical Village(二崁聚落保存區) is the first traditional settlement protection area of Taiwan. The buildings of Erkan Village still keep tradition and cultures of the ancient time, while the space arrangement was according to the local weather. With proper preservation, the village aims to present the original appearance and keeps on passing down traditional customs. In 2001, Erkan Village was selected as one of the ten important Penghu traditional buildings and also one of the 100 important buildings in Taiwan architectural history for its high historic and cultural value.
