林紘毅
In the story of Oliver Twist,we can the dirty streets and how child labors were treated durng the industrial revolution. There are also strong contrasts between the lower class and the upper class through the depictions of the environments and character traits. For example,Mr Brownlow, who lives in a wealthy community, appears to be a neat and kind gentleman throught the story. As for Fagin and his other associates who live in the ghetto, desperately tried to survive by engaging in illegal activities.Despite his misfortune through the story,Oliver was able to remain pure and morally good.Him redeeming Fagin at the end of the story put an end of his terrible fate, allowing Oliver to start a brand new life.

The story begins in a parish, where Oliver Twist an orphan was taken. There He and the other children lives a very sad life where they have to work every day and only get a little portion of food. Through the lottery, Oliver was picked to asked for a bigger portion of food and that ended up sent him to the church officials that in the moment is having a big and fancy meal. They decided to sell him to anyone who wants him for five pounds. Long short story he escaped from it and was given to the undertaker . There , he eats more, but still not very happy. He even ran away from the undertaker after gets into a fight with another child, because that child insulted his late mother.

After 7 days of walking, he arrived in London. There he meets Jack who offers him something to eat and a place to stay. Sadly, it turns out that Jack and his gang is a pickpocket who works for a criminal called Fagin. Then one day, Oliver and his two friends go to the town and saw his two friend pickpocketing one man’s handkerchief in front of a book store. Two of his friends run away and left him behind. As soon as he run, the book store owner thought that he was the culprit, while he might be run because he is afraid. Oliver was arrested by the police. Soon after that, the book store owner who knew that Oliver is not the culprit and he come to testify about it. He could not go there earlier because he has to watch for the bookstore. The owner of the bookstore pity him and then offers to take care of Oliver. But he couldn’t live freely, because he already knew about Jack and his friend’s activity. Long short story, Fagin and his gang discuss about how to bring Oliver back to them. Nancy and Bill was sent to take Oliver back. They did it by kidnapping him when he was sent by the bookstore’s owner to run an errand for him. Oliver screams to get people’s attention so that someone could help him, but Nancy claims that she is Oliver’s sister and saying that Oliver ran from the house, so no one believes Oliver.

Then, Fagin and Bill find out about the relationship that Oliver has with the rich bookstore’s owner. Few moments after that Oliver is sent to a burglary mission with Bill and another member. On this mission, Oliver is shot in the arm and failed to complete the mission, so Bill ran his way back to the gang while carrying Oliver. Long story short, Nancy helps Oliver in the end. She tried to find Mr. Brownlow (the owner of the bookstore), and tried to told him about the plans that Fagin made. But Bill heard about Nancy’s betrayal and killed her. And in the end of this movie, Mr. Brownlow, his wife and Oliver move to another country (or countryside), and live happily ever after.

From this movie, we could see the difference between the poor and the rich. How the poor treated poorly and how hard it is to keep going and living there. Oliver was struggling so much, so that he had no choice but to follow his new friends to pickpocket. His dream was to start a new life, but Fagin and the gang keep bothering him. The poor ones have no voice in the crowd, they couldn’t even protect themselves. When I looked into the internet, it said that Charles Dickens, the author, spent the similar childhood. While his father in debtor’s prison, he worked in a boot-blacking factory. They treated people badly. They failed to protect kid and low class people. They let the other beat low class people. And low class people have no other choice than to plan for a crime, to stay alive.

The story is focused on Oliver Twist's dislocated and bullied childhood, Oliver's biological mother accidentally conceived him, so she ran away from home and gave birth to Oliver in an asylum near London. Orphaned, Oliver's rough childhood began.

He grew up in an orphanage, working non-stop every day but never getting enough food to feed him. He escaped from an impersonal orphanage and was sent to apprentice in a coffin shop, but was abused again, so Oliver fled again, wandering the streets of London. But unfortunately, he was deceived into joining a thief group and was forced to be a petty pickpocket on the street. Oliver was arrested and imprisoned. Luck was not far from Oliver. Oliver's kindness helped him, and he was finally cleared of the crime, broke away from the thief group, learned his true identity, and reunited with his family.

The whole movie from the screen to the storyline has a darkness that cannot be dissipated, and it can even be said to be a little lifeless. But the story itself is shocking, and each character has a distinct personality. Oliver seems to have met very few good people in his life. In the orphanage, the orphans are forced to work day and night , and they can only eat a small amount of food in order to make them tame.No one gave him a smile at the coffin shop he went to, and the coffin shop owner who sympathized with him was afraid of his wife's prestige and finally beat him. Fled to London with difficulty, but fell into thief group again.

But there are times when the "bad guys" are benign. Nancy in the thief group was worried that Oliver would be killed and that her lover would commit a serious crime, so she chose to report that, but it was a pity that she was beaten and killed. Fagin, the leader of the group, is ruthless, but there are times when he cherishes and takes care of Oliver. Of course, he was punished by the law in the end, but the short-lived kindness made Oliver still willing to go to prison to visit him who had been talking crazy, and give hugs and prayers.

Charles Dickens novel tells us about how hard it is for an orphan to live in a society. At that time, many orphans are mostly forced to do labor by the rich people. In our opinion this movie want to shows us how greedy the government was that what they do only thinks about their self instead of the poor people. They did not give the poor people money what they deserve with the work they do. It also shows us how hard it is to live in london as poor people and orphans. Orphans must work hard to face their difficult live to live a better life. Charles Dickens tried to describe how difficult to live in London for poor people in that day. A little boy who just want to live normally, must to faces a real world. Forced for work to greedy rich people without get enough meal. Then the boy become a pickpocket and thief for poor people, until he gets a someone who really love and care about him.

Oliver is a boy who lose his mom and have no family came to a factory where only orphan children who works there. Without got enough food, the children must do labor forcedly. Until one day, Oliver ask to had more food to eat, then the owners of the factory being mad and offered him to anybody who want adopted him. Until some old man who scared with his own wife interested to adopted him. Unfortunately the wife of the old man did not like Oliver. Some day there is a fight between the wife and Oliver, then Oliver being punished. The next day Oliver decided went to London. After walked 7 days he arrived and met a kid who pickpocket. Oliver was sent to Feggie who is an old man a leader of kids pickpocket. Oliver taught by the pickpocket how to live as pickpocket. One day Oliver and 2 others pickpockets steal in bookstore. Unfortunately Oliver was caught, the bookseller looks Oliver so pity, so he bring Oliver came to his house and take care of him. Feggie afraid that Oliver was gonna tell the police where is the location of pickpockets, so he ordered Bill and Nasty to find Oliver. When Oliver went out the house of bookseller, he was caught by Bill and Nasty. After Oliver locked up by Feggie, Bill called his other friend to bring Oliver back to the bookseller house, so Bill can rob the house. After Oliver went to inside through the small window, he opens the front door and asked help to the bookseller. Bill was panicked and shoot Oliver at his right hand, then Bill and his friend bring Oliver back to the Feggie’s house. Nasty feels it doesn’t feel right, so she met with the bookseller secretly. Unfortunately Feggie knows about this because he already suspicious with Nasty, so he sent one of the pickpocket to spy nasty. Bill heard about it and so angry, he went back to his home and kill Nasty. Bill was being wanted, and Bill’s name and Feggie was on every newspaper. Bill decided to went out from London, ,in the other-side Feggie and other pickpockets, also with Oliver went to the old building for hiding. In the middle of the way, Bill decided to go back to London and kill his dog. The dog succeeded to escape and the police find the dog. Bill doesn’t know where he want to go, so he went to Feggie’s place. The police and the bookseller follow the dog to lead them to the place where Bill hiding. Bill was caught, so he ran and bring Oliver to become his hostage. When Bill tried to ran away from the police, he was slipped and hanging by a rope tied around his neck. After that Oliver was back to the bookseller’s house. At the end of the story Oliver ask the bookseller to met Feggie in the prison.

Introduction to the author:
Charles Dickens is good at describing miserable and growth story. Making good use of the real society context to layer-by-layer architecture the plot. Make the readers or moviegoers to sympathize with the role in the play. Also, Charles Dickens’ s work use to expose the cruel of the social class especially focus in lower middle class. It contribute to revolution and innovation in society at that time. Dickens‘ s works give poor people and lower class people some hope as well. He is an important novelist at that time.

The themes of Oliver Twist:
First, we can see the contradiction of poor people. Fagin and Bill are not entirely bad guys. However, they keep torturing Oliver in order to survive. The people within the same lower class fight against each other. The people from the parish also contempt them. The kindness is rare. Second, law is not the evidence of justice. The lower class people could be put into jail easily. The imprisonment is not only physical, but also spiritual. Finally, in Oliver Twist, real life is hard and miserable. The cruel truth demonstrates realism that the lower class had to endure at the time.

Comment:
From the story, we learned about humanity. To remain your innocence, and be brave like Oliver. To be generous, kind, and always believe in the best in people like Mr. Brownlow. This story shows us the dark side and the bright of human. We also learned that people have no reason to blame their mistakes on the environment or people around you. Oliver Twist and Mr. Brownlow are the perfect example of how people can still be kind even under really unfortunate circumstances.

Charles Dickens’s novels share miserable life, low class, poor people, and prison characteristics.

Oliver was an orphan and his actual name was unknown, which means that he wasn’t loved by anyone ever since he was still a baby, and was kept sending from one place to another like he was a “cheap item” when he turned nine. Nonetheless, this young boy didn’t go wrong and uncontrolled when people he met treated him in such a cruel and terrible way, and the only moment that made him fly into a rage was when people badly ruined his biological mother’s reputation; therefore, we were so surprised by Oliver’s purity and honesty after all the miserable situations and tragic circumstances that he had encountered. Moreover, Oliver could be rescued successfully and returned to Brown’s house in the end thanks to Nancy’s assistance. It’s a pity that she was killed even though she had done the right thing.

As for me, Oliver was the most honest human in the movie although he was immature and wasn’t well-educated. It’s ironic that mostly all religious adults appeared in the movie were rude and unreasonable all the time, even the justice was not really professional and was so easy to be influenced by others’ words that he didn’t have his own critical thinking to determine whether people was guilty or not.

In the movie, we can see how mess London is because of the industrialization. Fakin is an impressive person because of his characteristic. Although he is the lead of those young thieves, he still has a kind heart because he help Oliver recover from the shot. I think it is ironic that at the first place oliver lives, he wants to get more food, but the adults from almshouse do not want to give him more and say it is enough, ironically, the adults have a feast to eat, and all of them are very fat. It shows that how children would be deprived their right at that time. I think Oliver is a lucky child. Although he has been through a miserable childhood, he still keeps his naive mind. Later, he met Brownlow accidentally. Mr Brownlow treats him very well because of Oliver’s innocent eyes. In comparison to Oliver, I think Nancy is another miserable character, who also has a kind heart. When she found Oliver is brought back to Fakin’s home. She doesn’t want Oliver to live a poor life. Therefore, she confesses to Brownlow that Oliver is kidnapped by Fakin. However, Nancy doesn’t know that she is followed by Dawkins and he tells the truth to Fakin and Bill. Bill is very angry at her and beat her to death. I think it’s also a relief to her.
