Adverbs and Adverbial Phrases (p.62-70)
Ø Adverb:
If you want to say how someone does something, or how something happens, you
need to use an adverb and not an adjective.

Adverbs
of manner: describe how something happens. Where there are two or more verbs in
a sentence, adverb placement affects the meaning.
carefully,
easily, loudly, quickly, quietly
ex.
He quickly decided to write his paper. (his decision was quick)
He decided to write his paper
quickly. (his writing was quick)
u Be careful! Some
adverbs of manner are irregular, having the same form as the adjective.
fast, high, late far, early
ex. I woke up early this morning.

Adverbs
of place: describe where something happens.
anywhere,
downstairs, here, outside, underground
ex.
I wanted to go upstairs.
u Do not use
preposition to before this type of
adverbs.
3.
Adverbs
of purpose: describe why something happens.
so,
so that, because, since, to, accidentally
ex.
Bob accidentally broke the vast.
4.
Adverbs
of frequency: describe how often something happens.
always,
every, never, often, rarely
ex.
He never writes to me.
u Do not use do in front of never.
Do not use another negative word with never. ( Never has a negative meaning)
5.
Adverbs
of time: describe when something happens.
after,
finally, later, next, now, soon, then, while, before
ex.
She came home before dark.
